SUMMARY:Shelter Fundamentals Training
DESCRIPTION:Clyde L. Gracey Community Center aka Milton Community Center\n5629 Byrom St\, Milton\, FL 32570\nSaturday\, July 19 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm\nPlease click this link to signup to participate. \nDescription \nThe Shelter Simulation establishes an environment for participants to gain practical experience and refresher knowledge of shelter operations. In this unique learning experience\, there are core learning requirements that must be delivered to learners. Regional training leadership can customize the simulation delivery plan to fit the physical environment\, the desired simulation length\, and regional priorities. The flexibility of this simulation design enables it to be offered in 4 hours in a classroom or as a full-day intensive learning activity that engages learners in additional learning objectives.  \nPurpose \nThe Shelter Simulation provides an opportunity for participants to increase their knowledge of working in a shelter and gain confidence in performing various shelter tasks. \nLearning Objectives \nThe Shelter Simulation provides practical experience on how to conduct the various tasks required to maintain a functioning shelter. It also exposes learners to the types of situations they may encounter. Three overarching goals have been outlined for the simulation in order to provide the participants with a successful and productive learning experience: \n\nPromote teamwork through interactive group activities that correspond to operating a shelter.\nReinforce key activities and tasks that are involved in resourcing\, opening\, operating and closing a shelter.\nProvide participants with an opportunity to practice their skills and discuss ways to handle issues that arise in shelters.\n\nDue to liability concerns\, minors (children under 18) are not permitted to volunteer or accompany our CERT volunteers during events. With any event we work\, please make sure to bring necessary personal items such as hydration\, snacks\, sunscreen\, chairs or any other items you may need for the incident (traffic vests\, etc.) While we strive to have supplies at each event\, please be prepared in case something comes up that prevents your access to these supplies at the event. SUMMARY:ARES-Field Day
DESCRIPTION:This year our event will be located on beautiful Navarre Beach at the Black Skimmer Pavilion. \n \nARRL Field Day is a radio communications event that brings together amateur radio operators (also called “hams”) within your community. The theme for 2025 Field Day is “Radio Connects” – highlighting the many ways that wireless technology connects people across distances near and far. The event is part picnic\, campout\, practice for emergencies\, informal contest\, and most of all\, fun! ARRL Field Day is the most popular ham radio activity held annually in the US and Canada. On the fourth weekend in June each year\, more than 31\,000 hams get together with their radio clubs\, schools\, or friends to operate from remote locations. \nARRL Field Day is an annual demonstration and invites the general public and organizations to see how amateur radio can serve in an emergency\, When All Else Fails®. Hams are well-known for their communications support in real disaster and post-disaster situations. Despite the development of very complex\, modern communications systems — or maybe because they are so complex — ham radio has been called into action\, again and again\, to provide communications in crises when it really matters.

SUMMARY:ARES-Winlink Training
DESCRIPTION:Winlink is a communication system used in amateur radio that enables radio operators to send and receive email over radio frequencies. It is particularly valuable for disaster response and emergency communication. Winlink allows users to establish connections in areas where traditional communication infrastructure might be compromised or unavailable. \nIn disaster scenarios\, when standard communication channels are disrupted\, amateur radio operators can deploy Winlink to maintain vital communication. The software supports both text-based and email communication\, making it an effective tool for coordinating relief efforts\, sharing critical information\, and facilitating communication among emergency responders. \nThis training will include a classroom component as well as hands on with radios and gear.  All are welcome!  We suggest bringing a Windows laptop with you to setup for yourself.

SUMMARY:Ham Radio Technician Class
DESCRIPTION:You must use this link to register online for the class. \n \nThis class will prepare you to take the test for your amateur (ham) radio technician license. Some self study will be required to be successful. For the general public\, the class is free and we ask for a $20 donation for the book. License testing is $10\, payable via cash\, prior to taking your exam. \nAll Santa Rosa County CERT volunteers and first responders/dispatchers will receive the class\, book\, license exam\, and basic handheld ham radio for free. \nClass Schedule: \n\nDay 1 – Saturday April 5\, 9A-5P\nDay 2 – Saturday April 12\, 9A-5P\nTesting will occur at the end of day 2\n\nHam radio is a hobby that allows you to communicate with people all over the world using radio waves. But it’s not just about chatting with other hams – it’s also a way to help out in times of crisis. When natural disasters strike or communication networks go down\, hams are there to provide essential communication support. It’s a chance to use your skills and knowledge to make a real difference in the world. Plus\, it’s a fun and exciting way to explore the world of radio technology and meet fellow enthusiasts. So why wait? Start your journey in the exciting world of amateur radio today! \nYou will not pass if you do not also perform self-study. This is a highly-compressed course that depends on the focus and motivation of the student. Reading assignments must be done in advance of the classroom sessions. The classroom sessions are fast-paced\, covering a wide variety of material in a short time. The use of practice exams is very important for evaluating topic areas that need attention. We highly recommend you begin reviewing the YouTube course from Ham Radio Crash Course as well as take practice tests regularly for your technician exam.
